The name has evolved to describe the place where green merges into blue; this is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage-listed entities exist side by side- Australia’s Tropical Rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef.
Over the past decade, this region has become increasingly aware of the value and uniqueness of the natural environment. Ecotourism that focuses on this region’s world heritage pristine rainforests, its marine environment and ecosystems has now become a major part of the Port Douglas and Daintree tourism industry.

The definition of ecotourism adopted by Ecotourism Australia is: ”Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation”.
